Rob Lewis’s family began farming Glanelan in 1959 and until the 1970’s, it was a tenanted dairy farm. Rob now owns 600 acres spread over 3 farms including one that belonged to his uncle. Just over half the land lies in the fertile valley formed by the merging Rivers Elan and Wye south of Rhayader, the rest is higher up in the mountains.
The whole family is involved in agriculture: sons Gethin, Rhys and Ieuan have begun working on the farm whilst wife Audrey is part of the Royal Welsh Show organisation. Robs’ mother also lives on the farm, and rents out a converted barn ‘Glan Wye’ to holidaymakers.
Rob is the co-ordinator for the Cambrian Beef producers, and is deeply committed to promoting the region and its’ products.
He has a herd of 60 suckler cows which are put to his pure bred Limousin Bull to produce beef for the scheme. He also has a flock of 1200 breeding ewes mostly Welsh Mountain, Cheviots and Welsh mules. Rob likes to see some of his beef and lamb used locally by supplying it directly to butchers and catering businesses in the area.
